Eddie From “Frasier” Has Died

Enzo, beloved canine actor best known for playing Eddie Craine on the hit sitcom “Frasier” has taken his own life. He was 15 years old (78 in dog years).

Enzo took over the role of Eddie in 2000 from his father Moose, who left the show in order to pursue a career in feature films.  Enzo garnered much praise for his portrayal of Eddie. “Moose created the role, but Enzo took it much further. He really humanized Eddie, which is really difficult to do when you’re a dog,” said Kelsey Grammar. “It’s a shame the academy doesn’t recognize dogs, because if they did, it would be Enzo and not me who has a mantle full of Emmys.”

After “Frasier” wrapped in 2004, Enzo once again followed in his father’s paw steps and pursued film acting, landing such roles as Boodles in “See Spot Run” and the titular character in “My Dog Skip.”A victim of typecasting, landing roles became increasingly more difficult. “People just saw him as a jack russell terrier, but he could do so much more,” said M.D.S. co-star Frankie Munez, “He was just one of those people that got fucked by the system. God, how I hate the system.”

As worked slowed down, Enzo began to sink into a depression.  John Mahoney, his “Frasier” co-star and close friend noticed the change with Enzo. “Like all of us, he had his good days and his bad days, but after a while the bad days started to outnumber the good ones. Eventually, every day was a bad day for him. He got treatment, but it never really worked. I mean, I don’t think the doctors ever really understood what it was like for him being this great TV star and then, well, a nobody…Also, he was a dog, so I’m sure that made it hard for the doctors.”

Enzo was found early Saturday morning, hanging from a noose made from his leash. He survived by his trainer, wife, 38 children, and 164 grandchildren. A memorial service has been planned for this Wednesday at Beth Israel Synagogue in Del Mar.
